Burlington Announces Parade Grand Marshal
Sun. Sept 20th 2009
The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to name Burlington and Mineral county native, Louise Rogers Canan, Morgantown, WV as Grand Marshall for the Burlington Old Fashioned Apple Harvest Parade.
Mrs. Canan’s ancestors arrived in America between 1626 and 1680, migrating from the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland into West Virginia by way of Virginia. Another branch of her family landed in New York and traveled through Pennsylvania before arriving in Mineral County. A grandfather along with Mr. Luke Markwood established the community of Markwood located just a little to the west of Burlington.
Mrs. Canan remembers her school days in Burlington and reminisces about her early years, noting that she camped in the old Van Myra Campground, and about visits to Wilson’s Store (current site of the Baptist Church).
She recalls meeting many of the citizens of the community and county, as well as surrounding areas when her father, Reverend Lowell Rogers became a minister. Her mother was also a local girl, Rhoda McDowell.
She was married to Oscar Canan of Antioch. They had three daughters.
Mrs. Canan enjoys travel and family and working with her church. She informed parade committee members that she usually walks 2 or 3 miles before breakfast every day.
Louise was chosen as Upper Potomac Fair Queen at the age of eighteen months in 1924, she is our Original “Baby Apple Dumpling”.
The Upper Potomac Fair was held for only a few years during the 1920’s, the event took place on the Vandeaver Farm which was in the very center of Burlington, next to the the school and across the road from the Burlington Union Church. The livestock were located on the bottom floor of the barn and the other exhibits on the main floor. One of the high lights for fair goers was Glaze’s Ferris Wheel and Merry-Go-Round brought from Keyser during the celebration.
Anyone interested in participating in the parade may contact Tom Simpson at the fire station.
