BURLINGTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, INC.
• ORGANIZED
The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department was organized as a department which began using 1 1929 engine out of 1 station on Route 50 at the intersection of Patterson Creek Road South. Today we operate out of a much newer and larger station located 1 mile east of the old Station on Route 50, currently we operate 1 Rescue Engine, 1 Engine Tanker, 1 Tanker, 1 Attack unit, 1 Brush unit, 2 ALS/BLS units, 1 Kubota ATV, and of course the 1929 engine. We are professionals dedicated to the safety, welfare and training of our fellow members and the public and to the protection and preservation of our community.
• LAST ORIGINAL MEMBER
Ed Weaver - Ed joined Burlington Volunteer Fire Department in 1948. Ed served as Assistant Chief from the late 1950's into the 1960's including during the reorganization. He told his son George one time that he held the office serving under Max Whipp, "Cotton" Likins and Ralph Webb. He was one of the driver/operators for the 1929 GMC. Ed and his father stayed with the company during the reorganization even though several of the original members dropped out. He became inactive around 1967-68 when he was diagnosed as having Addisons Disease. He battled this along with heart disease the rest of his life. His son George has his original membership card from 1948 , a copy of which was placed in his jacket pocket for burial. Ed touched a lot of peoples lives during his lifetime. Ed served as a positive role model for George and his 3 children influencing them all to be involved in the fire service. Ed's father was a charter member of BVFD, and with Ed, George and George's children there have been 4 generations of Weavers in the fire service .
